Sister...will you read to me?

I don't know if she ever will...nor do I know if I want her to anytime soon, but Miss Ella has been calling Sofia "sister" for as long as the Red Flame and I can remember. It's not like we use that in place of Sofia. She just calls her that. A year or so ago, Sofia asked, "Ella, why do you call me sister?" In true Ella fashion, without skipping a beat Ella said, "Because I love you." My heart burst that day...
So last night as I sat on the floor stretching getting ready for the gym, I was reading stories for Ella before Artyom got home. When he did, I got up to leave and Ella's face about made me stay. Sofia- the awesome big sister that she is, jumped down from her chair and said, "Ella, I will read to you!" grabbed the book and Ella and "Sister" read together. My heart burst again...
Sofia is an excellent reader. She does extrememly well and I hope I can catch little moments like these of these two sisters. While rocking Ella the other day as she didnt feel well, she was going through all the people she loved, Mom and Dad were mentioned, Grandpa, all her cousins, Betsy, Linda, Tanner, Dave, and she said "Sister". Momma, she told me. "I love sister because we will be sisters for ever and ever..." Yes my sweets. You will.

Memory Catcher Books...opportunities in the making

Paul Puffer
It's done. It's complete. It's pretty amazing.
I was able to make a Memory Catcher Book for Paul Puffer, a very close family friend and I am SO pleased at how it turned out. I look back at the first book I did for my Mom and, like many things in life, have improved as I go. I cannot wait to give it to the family and only wish I could do so in person.

I hope it gives them as much joy, laughter, and tears of happiness that it gave me while I put it together. It just solidifies if for me. JUST how strongly I feel about Memory Catcher Books and how I wish everyone could have one (or more than one!) of the special people in thier lives.

I am in the process of starting up another for another family friend. I hope it works out. There are so many details and a small window of time to "catch" the memories while fresh on peoples minds. I hope each and every person who knew this kind and gentle soul will put it on thier "to-do" list and make it a priority to share a memory for the family.

***I am now working on a Memory Catcher Book for the Birk Family of Jon. It is amazing to see the small differnces in memories that people have, and the general outpouring of LOVE from people who care so much about the Birk's and want this book to be special for them.

To make 2 books now for people that I care for, I am feeling pretty blessed at the moment.

Movie night at school

It was one of those extracurricular activities that I kinda hoped the girls would FORGET about! hehe. It was a school night, at 6:30, so not super late, but I knew it would put them to bed later and I really did'nt want to go. I know. I suck.
But go we did and they had a fun time. Which is what it's all about. They got to bed late, had full bellies of popcorn and werent exactly "angels" today...but it was worth it. I really do love the kids school and adore the teachers they have. They were surrounded by other kids when we walked in and pulled over to a blanket to sit with all the other girls. It made my heart happy.

Sign of the times?

This was MY city while on my mission in Russia. It was pretty scary at first to hear of it when I got into the car that morning. Luckily, no one we know was hurt very badly. One little boy of friends of ours was at kindergarten and all the little kids ran over to the window to see the "bright light" and then it landed and the sonic boom blew out the windows. He went to the hospital with stitches on his forehead and face. SCARY.

Chelyainsk a city UNHEARD of prior to this- just put itself on the map.

Meteor Explodes Over Russia

People heading to work in Chelyabinsk heard what sounded like an explosion, saw a bright light and then felt a shockwave according to a Reuters correspondent in the industrial city 1,500 km (950 miles) east of Moscow.
A fireball blazed across the horizon, leaving a long white trail in its wake which could be seen as far as 200 km (125 miles) away in Yekaterinburg. Car alarms went off, windows shattered and mobile phone networks were interrupted.
"I was driving to work, it was quite dark, but it suddenly became as bright as if it was day," said Viktor Prokofiev, 36, a resident of Yekaterinburg in the Urals Mountains.
"I felt like I was blinded by headlights," he said.
No fatalities were reported but President Vladimir Putin, who was due to host Finance Ministry officials from the Group of 20 nations in Moscow, and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev were informed.
A local ministry official said such incidents were extremely rare and Friday's events might have been linked to an asteroid the size of an Olympic swimming pool due to pass Earth at a distance of 27,520 km (17,100 miles) but this was not confirmed.
Russia's space agency Roscosmos said the meteorite was travelling at a speed of 30 km (19 miles) per second and that such events were hard to predict. The Interior Ministry said the meteorite explosion had caused a sonic boom.
Russia's Emergencies Ministry said 514 people had sought medical help, mainly for light injuries caused by flying glass, and that 112 of those were kept in hospital. Search groups were set up to look for the remains of the meteorite.
"There have never been any cases of meteorites breaking up at such a low level over Russia before," said Yuri Burenko, head of the Chelyabinsk branch of the Emergencies Ministry.

Remarks given at Aunt Diane's Funeral

Just thought I would "document" what I said at Aunt Diane's Funeral. The girls who live here (Sofia, Ella and Maya) also sang, "I am a child of God" and were SO cute and sang loud and clear. It was precious.

Remarks given by Charity Pederson Martushev at Aunt Diane's Funeral

How many times have we heard when driving any significant distance, “Are we there yet?!” Do we roll our eyes or just look ahead to the road in front of us?

When on a long distance trip, you will find along the road- markers. Placed at intervals at one mile or occasionally, parts of a mile. These milestones are constructed to provide reference points along the road. These can be used to reassure travelers that the proper path is being followed, and to indicate either distance travelled or the remaining distance to a destination.

In the lives of each of her nieces and nephews, I cannot help but think that Aunt Diane’s motto throughout her life was, “Never miss a milestone”.

-For every milestone of birth since my brother, Jonathan Snow Pederson, the eldest of her nieces and nephews, Aunt Diane was there to help out any way she could. She only missed the birth of her namesake, and my daughter, Ella Diane Martushev by about 10 minutes since Ella arrived much faster than anyone could have anticipated. I think she was always a bit bummed about that.

- Her commitment to making the first year a milestone with our family tradition of a Panda cake is found in pictures across the years as I look at my brother, Ryan Demars Pederson, nephew of Diane, now 36 with a family of his own, sitting in his highchair with a panda cake in front of him. I compare that to my daughter, Sofia Hope Martushev’s first Birthday (now 6) with her Panda cake. The only difference?  A pink bow instead of blue bow tie. Not even the arthritis that plagued her stopped Aunt Diane from making that first birthday milestone count.

- From her pies, cakes and who can forget the famed frogeye salad, Aunt Diane filled the hearts and tummies of all who surrounded her with the culinary creations she made for the many family events we shared together. You knew, just like traveling a mile will lead to another marker, attending a Pederson event would lead to your taste buds being tantalized with delight. My brother and nephew to Diane, Theodore Paul Pederson, while he lived here and I never went home empty handed at a dinner or get together. Leftovers were a given.

-I remember the summer after my High School graduation was spent here visiting with Aunt Diane and Grandma and Grandpa Pederson.  Aunt Diane made the milestone count as I was taken shopping where she purchased me a new outfit and took me to get my pictures taken. She could not wait to have me show them to my Mom and Dad. She made each person in her life feel so incredibly beautiful and special.

-Birthstones were something that Aunt Diane held in high regard. She made sure each of her nieces knew what their birthstones were and that we were proud of that marker. Aunt Diane gave me my first real pearl ring when I turned 16 and since then, when I think of a pearl, I think of Aunt Diane.

-Always the elect lady, Aunt Diane made sure that the proper path was being followed, mile markers adhered to and showed by example what a difference good manners, poise, and eloquence of speech to name a few could make. She laid down the law when needed and always layered it with love unconditional. My brother and nephew to Diane, Russell Dale Pederson would often be found listening intently because with Aunt Diane, if you could get her to sit down, stories were sure to follow. Truly the matriarch of our family, her keen memory told or our wonderful family heritage and was next to none.

-David Kent Pederson, my brother and nephew to Diane may not have chosen the “RIGHT” and opted to go to BYU over The University of Utah when it came to colleges to attend, but that did not stop Aunt Diane from being pleased as ever as the first Great niece, Nicole Linda Pederson was born. Another milestone she refused to miss. Elder Neal A. Maxwell said, moments are the molecules that make up eternity. Aunt Diane made each moment a milestone and each one counted.

Every road leads to somewhere. Each milestone we have traveled with Aunt Diane including this one is just one along the many we will have. I think Aunt Diane would simply ask each one of us to continue to focus on each mile marker, each milestone, ensuring that we are going in the right direction, the only way that leads to ultimate happiness and eternal families. It would be Aunt Diane posing the question, “Are we there yet?” And if we are not, then we need to keep going… How grateful we are for the knowledge that we will see her again.

Breakfast- it IS the most important meal of the day

You know your Blueberry french toast breakfast casserole is a hit when...
I am in a breakfast club here at work. Basically everyone who wants to sign up, gets assigned a Friday and they bring breakfast for as many as are on the list. When my turn came up, I knew EXACTLY what I was going to make. The now traditional for Christmas morning Blueberry French Toast Breakfast casserole with blueberry compote syrup. DE-LISH.
Its seriously dessert in a dish for breakfast. And from the pic I took above, ,most everyone agreed. Then I put it out an FB and got a TON of requests for the recipe. So I will continue to share the love and let you expereince the blueberry goodness for yourself. BEWARE: just reading the recipe may/may not cause your mouth to water...

Here you go!

*I usually double the syrup recipe

Overnight Blueberry French Toast Recipe

French Toast:
12 slices bread, cut into cubes (french or Texas toast work well)
1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, cut in cubes
2 cups blueberries (fresh or frozen)
12 large eggs
1/3 cup maple syrup
2 cups milk (I use 1 cup milk and 1 cup cream)

Syrup:
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
2 Tablespoons cornstarch
1 cup blueberries (fresh or frozen)
1 Tablespoon butter

Arrange 1/2 of the bread cubes in a greased 9 x 13 pan.
Place cream cheese cubes and blueberries evenly over the bread cubes.
Top with remaining bread cubes.
Mix together eggs, milk, and syrup.
Pour over bread cubes and cover pan with foil. Let chill in refrigerator overnight.

Bake covered with foil at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 30 minutes or until fluffy and golden. Top with sauce. Serves 8.

Syrup: Cook water, sugar, and cornstarch until thickened. Stir in blueberries and simmer for 10 minutes. Add butter and stir until melted. Serve over the french toast.

I heart my kindergarter

I have to work. Its a fact of my life. I am also a Mom. This is also a fact. So when something comes up with the girls at school or other events that they are involved in, I need to prioritize my day- which is not always easy as a working mom, but I put my work aside and JUST be a Mom. So that is what I did on Valentine's Day.
The story behind it is quite funny, as there was a slip in Sofia's backpack to ask Parent's to come and volunteer to help with the party. Sofia BEGGED me for days to get me to go and I said I thought it would be ok. Well much like her momma, she took matters in her own hands and filled out the slip herself and got it back to the teacher. So I was on the hook!
I was a bit late in getting there, since I had a meeting that ran a bit over. I sped to get to the shool and agonized at how upset she would be that I was not only LATE, but REALLY LATE and wondered if it would have been better if I had not gone at all. Nope.
I walked in and saw her at a "game station" they had set up. So I just sat down at the table and waited for her to see me. When she did? BEST. MOMENT. EVER. I would not have traded the look on her face at that moment for anything in the world.

Stowaway

Just another pic of proof about how COLD it has been. This crayon landed on the runner of our van one evening after the girls got out of the van. Not one, but TWO days later, I headed up to the hospital to go see Aunt Diane and when I got out of the car, the crayon was STILL there. It had held on from West Jordan to Bountiful and back. Seriously? I figured it would hang on till Spring when the thaw decided to come through....
One of the girls got a hold of it first. It broke into two trying to take it out of its frozen tundra, but at least they now have a yellow crayon to draw a sun...Even if we haven't seen it in ages, we can still color one!

One New Year's Resolution-DONE!

One of my New Year's Resolutions was to be open to new things; with work, family, life, and food! I have a co-worker that asks me everytime she goes, if I would like to get Sushi with her and every time (until now) I have declined. In lieu of the resolutions list, I surpised the heck out of her when I agreed to go one day when she asked.
She "re-introduced" me to sushi-as I can say I HAVE tried it twice beofore and...let's just say I went home hungry. Voni gave me a few suggestions on what to get so that definitely helped!  I can say I liked everything on the plate above! Well except for the one with the raw fish on top...I wasnt too keen about taking that big of a step yet. But it was pretty goood. I was so glad she kept on asking me and not giving up. It is not something I would eat every day...but I was quite proud of myself for doing it!

Next up...running a 5k.

Cutest Cousins!!

We were so lucky to have Heidi and the boys stay with us on Christmas Eve and take part in all the Christmas Day fun. It was SO fun having the little guys in the house and the girls loved to play with them. Eli is a DOLL and as this was his second (or third?) time at our house, so he felt right at home. It made my heart happy. Erik is the happiest baby I think I have ever met. He just let me snuggle him the entire time and even Sofia got to get in on the baby holding action.
I LOVE having cousins here. It gets a little lonely without all my brothers and the many cousins we have near by, but it makes it all the more sweeter when they get to come and visit.

Cheap labor

According to the news it has been the worst winter (snowfall and temperatures) in 17 years. And the coldest January since the early 1900's. By the look out our front window for at least a month striaght- I will not begin to argue that statistic. All I wanted was a "White Chrismas" I guess you need to remember to be careful what you wish for. We have been shoveling FEET of snow throughout the month of January. And my lucky Dad got to be a part of the shoveling crew of Me, Artyom and himself as we went around the neighborhood and shoveled driveway, after driveway, after driveway. Going from one house to another.
Then as I came home one day, I saw Betsy out in front shoveling our front driveway with the girls. I had to laugh because as I was taking a pic of Ella in front of the snow, it looks like Im completely putting my child through hard labor as she continues to shovel the driveway...FYI- she did it herself and she absolutely loved it.

Ella- Let's talk about the beauty of pillows

And when I say Pillows, I mean pillows that are used at the bottom of the stairs when you and your sister Sofia decide it would be a super idea to go flying down the stairs in a basket without pillows to cushion (literally) your fall.
It's exactly what happened when Ella went down the stairs in one of my cute Ikea black and white baskets and had a VERY close encounter with the wall. The result? A broken collarbone!
We didnt know anything had happened- it was done on Thursday and Friday I just had "that feeling" you know the one. That feeling that you should not, and most of the time in my case CAN NOT ignore. So I didnt. I took her into the doc and she was so brave. She went in to get "pictures of her bones!" and came out with the x-ray showing on bone at a slant (albeit straight line-the way it should be) and the other looked like the top of a triangle. Broken right in two. I cried. She didnt.
To add insult to injury, they did not have a "figure eight" which they would typically use to help the bone stay straight as it healed. So we got a too big for her sling and wrapped her up in an ace bandage. LESS EFFECTIVE.
She shimmys out of it any chance she can get and we figure the bone will heal around her 10TH birthday...keep in mind she is 4...
The doc said it should heal well and she may have a "slight deformity" in the form of a bump on her shoulder...Hmm. The alternative was surgery and putting a plate in her shoulder...No thank you. She can live with a bump that may/maynot be visible! He said if she came back to yell at him on her prom night because her "deformity" was showing with her strapless dress, to not blame him. I took this as a GOOD thing. No strapless, spaghetti straps for you Ella- you dont want your "DEFORMITY" showing...hehehe. Yep. Ill play that one up as long as I can!
So here she is at the doctors, post wrap up. All smiles despite her first broken bone. Oh Ella...

Fashion Show at Uncle Kent and Aunt Betty's

Its no wonder the girls LOVE to go to Uncle Kent and Aunt Betty's house. They have a pool, a zipline, a playroom that you have to climb up a ladder for, and to top it all off, they have a plethora of dress-ups courtesy of Kenzie and Cameron. So, without fail, when we head over, they will do a fashion show for all in attendance. This time Cameron was sweet enough to act as MC (which usually falls on me) and we got 3 outfit changes between them. SO FUN!
Sugar and spice and everything FASHION! That is what MY 2 little girls are made of!

Triple P-The annual Primary Pancakes in your Pajamas!

Our Primay President is, in a word...Awesome. Every year to introduce the kids to thier new teachers for the year, she holds a Primary Pancake Breakfast in your Pajamas. It is usually the Saturday or two following Christmas so my girls always love to have the pj's they get to open every Christmas Eve. This year was extra special in that Grandpa was still here and he got to go with the girls and even have some breakfast. The waffles were SOOO good. And what is not fun about going in your pjs and eating a yummy breakfast?! We had a great time. And I personally LOVE that Ella left that hat on so stylishly the entire time.

Midnight...(well almost midnight) munchies

I have been out of the habit a bit since Grandpa has been here at our house. But figured I needed to put down some experiences for the girls so when I eventually get this all into a book...there will be something to show!
Ever since Ella broke her collarbone, she has been sleeping with us on and off during the night. Its an endless we put her in bed, she gets out, we put her in and then one of us gets too tired to deal and just sleep.
The other night she woke after 10pm complaining that she was hungry. Well I am a sucker for that cute face and little voice, so we broke out what sounded good-cheezy pringles, a banana, brownie and some milk.
It's moments like these that reminded me JUST how much I love this little one, and JUST how much I love being her Mom.
